This Lagomorph inhabits tundra and rocky terrain in northern Canada, Greenland and the state of Alaska. With an average length of 67 cm (26 in) and weighing between 4 to 5 kg (9 to 11 lb), “Lepus arcticus” is the largest hare found in North America. These generally nocturnal mammals mainly feed on willows, roots and other woody plants, but will occasionally eat berries, mosses, leaves and even carrion. In the high arctic at its northernmost range, it is not uncommon to find these hares in groups of 100 to 300 animals when feeding.
