There are seven known species of hibiscus found on the Hawaiian Islands. On June 6th, 1988, the Pua Aloalo, also known as the Yellow Hibiscus, was officially designated as the state flower of Hawaii. The exotic Hibiscus brackenridgei, also called ma’o-hau-hele, is endangered in its natural habitats. However, this member of the Malvaceae family thrives as a very popular ornamental in Hawaiian and Southern Californian yards.
